My problem with problem solving.

Okay here's what I know: Teaching mathematical topics through real-life, problem-solving contexts and enquiry-oriented environments helps students develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.  Here's what I don't know: How?   The emphasis in mathematics has shifted from teaching problem solving to teaching  via  problem solving. T eaching math through problem solving helps students:  developing different skills and the ability to apply their skills to unfamiliar situations to learn how to gather, organize, and interpret a variety of information formulate questions, seek out any appropriate data, experiment and discover patterns.    encourages them to be curious, confident and open-minded But, h onestly, how do I do it? Just put students in groups, hand them some chart paper, and put a problem up on the board from the textbook? Kay kids, when the big hand gets to the nine we'll take it up! Right? Mmm...not quite.   Already ...
